At Gurrane Boat Club, we believe that every boat carries more than just a crew — it carries stories, memories, and meaning. That’s why we’re proud to share the story behind one of our most special boats, the Juman, named in honour of James O’Sullivan’s grandfather.
James, our chairman and one of Gurrane’s founding members, grew up hearing stories about his grandfather’s strength, generosity, and love of the sea. Known to many as "Juman," he was a well-respected figure in the community—a man of few words but great presence who valued hard work, loyalty, and local pride.
When it came time to name one of our club’s first boats, there was no hesitation. Naming it Juman felt right — not just as a personal tribute but as a way to anchor the club in the spirit of the people who came before us. It's a reminder that while rowing is about looking forward, it’s also about remembering where we’ve come from.
Every time Juman takes to the water, we row with a little more meaning — carrying not just our goals and ambitions but the quiet strength of a man who inspired one of our own to build something lasting.
Here's to Juman — and to the generations that shape us.
